Intentional Attitudes that Support the Cultivation of Mindfulness and Wisdom:
Awareness and cultivation of our attitudinal disposition are essential to cultivating a healthy mind. Too often, we are unaware of the influence our attitude has on us, or we simply accept it as who we are in that moment.
Our attitudes have a profound effect on our state of mind. These attitudes color our mind and shape our perceptions, concepts, thoughts, emotions, outlook, actions, etc.
In daily life and during practice, check your attitude as frequently as you are able.
At this point in the Foundations of Mindfulness course, we will be checking into the following three aspects of healthy attitude.
- Kindness / Friendliness: The desire to not cause harm; a willingness to create a safe, caring, non-judgmental, and friendly environment. This kind and friendly attitude is offered to both one's self and others.
- Compassion: When there is recognition of suffering or a disruption in the integrity of well-being, compassion manifests as an empathetic desire to end suffering. Again, compassion is offered to both one's self and others.
- Generosity / Letting Go: Generosity is a willingness to let go of familiar patterns of heart and mind when we recognize them as being destructive to health and wellbeing. Sometimes we identify strongly with our concepts, beliefs, and habits. We hold on to them even when they are unhealthy. Letting go allows us the opportunity to realize new possibilities and growth. Generosity allows us to offer words, and actions that promote health and wellbeing.
